Ten years ago I said yes to an opportunity that would take me far away from family and friends, from a career I loved but had outgrown, from a life that was full but too comfortable.
The opportunity was a move to Beijing, but for my husband’s work, not mine. We packed up our flat in London, and with our two girls who were then one and four we moved to the heart of a city of 22 million people. I did not speak the language, or know another soul there.
When I say I understand what it means to start a life from scratch, it is because I really do! There were so many ups, and so many downs, but after three years when it was time to move on I knew we made the best of it, we were not ready to go home!
Since then, we have started life from zero again twice, in Buenos Aires and then in Madrid. Moving and starting again is painful. The bittersweet feeling of knowing you cannot hold back the time, that your friends will be scattered all over the world, but that you have a life and experiences that could not be paralleled by staying in one place.
For me, my career was always the hardest piece of the jigsaw to fit. On my first move I felt stuck, frustrated, resentful and guilty, like I was wasting the experience and opportunity. Friends and family made ‘suggestions’ about what I should be doing. None of them fitted. My mindset transformed when I worked with a coach in Beijing to help me figure out my next career steps, even though I went back into a marketing job, a door was opened to a new career.
Discovering my own path was key to making everything work. I used our next assignment to retrain and coaching became my way forward. I am passionate about helping my clients find their path. To tap into their own voice and power, to see their worth and use their strengths and talents to start a new journey.
